古都・鎌倉の静かな住宅街に、看板のないパン屋がある。青空が広がった４月下旬のこの日も、小さな家庭用オーブンから外はサクサク、中はふんわりとした食パンが焼き上がり、香ばしい匂いが漂っていた。
６年前、元競輪選手の多以良（たいら）泉己（みずき）さん（３９）は妻の総子（ふさこ）さん（４３）と自宅で、食パンやライ麦パン、クルミパンなどのインターネット販売（ｈｔｔｐ：／／ｗｗｗ．ｇａｔｅａｕｄａｎｇｅ．ｃｏｍ）を始めた。
レース中の事故による後遺症で、一日に作れるのは平均３つだが、生き方に共感して注文する人は尽きない。食べた人から「こんなに勇気の出るパンはない」「生きる力をもらった」と多くの感想が寄せられ、口コミで「天使のパン」として広まった。今は注文から１４年待ちになっている。
■落車事故、後遺症…
横浜市で育った。運動神経抜群で、小学３年のときに父親と宇都宮競輪場に行き、プロ選手を夢見た。高校卒業後、６度目の受験で競輪学校に合格。平成１２年４月、２５歳で念願のプロデビューを果たした。１７年３月には聡子さんと結婚した。公私ともに順風だったが、悲劇は時を待たなかった。
その５カ月後、最上級クラスへの昇級がかかったレースで１着でゴールする直前、後続の転倒に巻き込まれて頭から落車した。２日間生死の境をさまよい、意識が戻っても手足が動かせず、言葉も出ない。
１カ月後、何とか歩けるようになったが「これからどうすればいいのか」。不安の中、小さいころから得意だったお菓子作りとともに始めたのが、パン作りだった。生地を手でこねるのが、効果的なリハビリだと医師から聞いていた。
試しに総子さんが企画したイベントなどで売ると、「どこの店よりもおいしい」とあっという間に完売した。「パン一つでこんなに喜んでもらえるなんて。もっと多くの人に食べてほしい」。総子さんに支えられながら作り方や材料の研究を重ね、２０年４月、ネット販売を始めた。ただ、体は元に戻らず、同年７月の選手復帰期限に引退した。
■「子供の記憶に残る」
今も左足にまひが残り、補助器具とつえがないと歩けない。脳の障害で集中力も保てない。感情のコントロールがきかず、物に当たるときもある。後遺症に苦しみながらパン作りを続けられたのは、お客さんへの思いがあったからだ。
難病の父を看（み）る女性、生まれつき障害のある子供を持つ親…。「パンで少しでも幸せになってほしい」。一人一人を思い浮かべ、納得いくまで何度も作り直されて出来上がる一品。食べた人から寄せられるメッセージに「自分よりも過酷な運命に立ち向かう人がいる」と、勇気づけられたことは数え切れない。
パンを心待ちにする人は１万４６００人に。「確かに事故で失ったものは大きかったけど、得たものも大きかった。人生に無駄なことなんて一つもない」。一昨年８月には長男、龍聖（りゅうせい）くんが生まれた。「子供の記憶に残る父親になりたい」。新たな夢ができた。
